Arnold Schwarzenegger Tried to Make a “Governator” Cartoon, and It Was Insane [Video]

This video is a few years old now, but I maintain that anyone who has not seen this video is missing out on one of life’s greatest joys. This was the teaser for a cartoon called The Governator, which Arnold Schwarzenegger himself developed (along with Stan Lee, because of course), and would have featured the former Governor of California returning to civilian life, only to become a high-tech superhero.

It. Is. NUTS.

This project was scrapped after the Governor’s infidelity scandal came to light, which is a shame – I mean, this could have been the worst show ever, but I would have delightedly watched every single episode at least a dozen times each.

This show was definitely meant to be a throwback to the Saturday morning cartoons of the ’80s and ’90s, along the lines of “Captain Planet,” complete with a gang of scrappy kid sidekicks who I can only assume are meant to be Arnold’s illegitimate children.

A couple of highlights from the trailer:

  • The newspaper headline at the top says “Global Crime Wave” in huge letters, followed by “Robot Rampage” in much smaller font. How is “Robot Rampage” not the biggest headline? Way to bury the lead, guys.
  • Does anybody actually doubt that Arnold Schwarzenegger, in real life, has a secret facility under his mansion, complete with holograms and a transforming motorcycle? I didn’t think so.
  • Sometimes you can’t afford sound effects or other actors for your television trailer. When that happens, you can always just blast “Pump It” by the Black Eyed Peas and it’s not at all the most annoying thing ever.
  • It turns out that a robot that turns into an Audi is easily the least intimidating Transformer ever (including the Transformer who turned into a cassette tape).
  • Once again, it is completely taken for granted that Arnold has super-strength, and I am 100% on board with this.
  • Arnold flings a robot into a giant tanker truck, which turns out to be a “Got Milk” truck. That’s how they transport milk, right? In giant metal propane trucks?
  • Of course the motorcycle drives itself.

It’s also important to note that this was going to be a whole franchise – they were talking about creating a 3-D animated movie, video games, comic books, and I can only assume more action figures than you can shake a self-driving motorcycle at. This could have been the world we lived in, guys.

You’re probably going to need to take some time to process that thought – I know I did.
